Jurgens goes up a size

Lightweight van specialist to introduce bigger, Jayco Silverline rival
Lightweight composite caravan specialist Jurgens is moving into the heavyweight Aussie van market, with the release of a new range of larger, better-equipped caravans later this year.
Possibly on display as early as this year’s Melbourne Leisurefest at Sandown Racecourse from October 5-8, the all-new Jurgens' ‘big van’ range will be the “big brother to our current range of J Series caravans,” according to Jurgens’ marketing manager John Hughes.
While remaining tight-lipped on specific details, Hughes said the new range will slot into the volume-selling, mid-market, full-height van segment, popular with grey nomads and increasingly, cashed-up families.
Likely to be available in couples' as well as family bunk layouts, the new models will have features not seen on other Australian-built Jurgens vans, such as big payloads, A-frame stone shields and bike racks.
“They’re not going to big, boxy heavy caravans… but they’ll have bigger payloads, and be a bit wider, taller and longer,” he said.
“They certainly won’t be something where you can put four jerry cans on the back or four spare wheels. They will be in the middle, volume part of the market where most (Australian-built) vans are…
“I guess they’re going to be more like a Jayco Silverline or a Bailey Rangefinder, that sort of ilk.”
Hughes said the new range will have a similar look, but offer more layouts than the rough-road Travado (pictured), which was introduced two years ago and is only available in the one 23ft layout, with a 2440kg Tare and 3000kg ATM.
Most Jurgens pop-tops and caravans have Tare weights under two tonnes and are designed primarily for on-road use and shorter-term holidays.
“The new range will be similar (to the Travado) but have different sizes,” he said. “The Travado is going to be phased out, so it’s going to be an all-new generation (of vans).”
