Jayco supports blonde nomad

Olympic swimmer Lisa Curry is touring around Australia for three years in a motorhome to promote healthy living

Serial sponsor Jayco has thrown its support behind a road trip with a difference: a three year, health and fitness motivational tour undertaken by three-time Olympian Lisa Curry.

Driving a range-topping Jayco motorhome, Curry plans to visit 100 towns around Australia over the next three years, spreading her healthy living message through free motivational classes and training sessions.

As part of her mega-tour, which kicked off a month ago, Curry dropped into the Jayco stand at this month’s Victorian Caravan, Camping & Touring Supershow in Melbourne.

A recipient of an Order of Australia as well as an MBE, Curry first hit the headlines as a swimmer at the 1980 Olympics in Moscow. More recently she’s been the chairperson of the Australia Day council, a health and fitness advocate and author of six books.

Curry said the 'One Life Once Chance Aussie Road Trip', will fulfil a long held ambition to travel around Australia by road, while spreading the message of the importance of leading a healthy and active life.

The 50-year-old mother of three and fitness fanatic had a life-changing health scare a few years ago, which left her in a cardiac ward for a month and reassessing her priorities.

“I was lying there and I was thinking, I need to be true to myself. I need to be doing what I love to be doing every single day,” she said.

“(The trip is) just combining my love of adventure and camping with my love of helping people and coaching.”

A self-described ‘blonde nomad’ Curry, together with her partner, 30-year-old musician Joel Walkenhorst, will be travelling in style, behind the wheel of an Iveco Daily-based Jayco Optimum motorhome.

The 28ft long, four berth luxury motorhome is crammed with creature comforts including two electric slide-outs, rear ensuite, leather lounge/dinette, 184 litre fridge, generator, air-conditioner, washing machine, and external BBQ and entertainment system.

Powered by a 130kW/400Nm 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine and boasting a 3.0-tonne towing capacity, the motorhome is also towing a Jayco twin-axle Work N Play toy hauler, which provides a further six berths plus a rear garage area to accommodate a few toys (maybe a jet ski as Curry’s home base is Mooloolaba on Queensland's Sunshine Coast!)

All up, the RV package is worth around $250,000.

Jayco has a long history of supporting a range of causes, including a recent 12 month road trip to raise money for cancer research.
