From one of the most challenging 12 months in its 45 year history, to one of its best... that's the likely scenario for Australia's biggest-selling and most successful RV manufacturer, with Jayco expecting a 30 per cent, year-on-year annual production increase in 2021 off the back of the COVID-19 caravanning boom.
“There has been a significant increase of people purchasing Jayco caravans and we have seen continuous growth, with a 35 per cent increase in sales across new and used RVs compared to the previous year,” Jayco National Sales Manager, Scott Jones said.
“For the 2020 calendar year, we finished with 10,600 units produced, and that was with eight weeks out of production due to lockdown in Melbourne. This year, we’re forecasting 13,800 units,” he said.
To meet pent up demand for recreational vehicles, which has seen waiting lists for new caravans balloon out to 12 months or more across the industry, Jayco has boosted its workforce at its Dandenong-Victoria mega-factory to more than 1200 staff – up from around 900 during the first pandemic-related factory lockdown in Melbourne.
To maintain sales momentum, new technology and safety equipment has been rolled out across many of the latest models in the 2021-model Jayco range, including the Lippert Sway Command electronic stability control system and Lippert Tire Linc Tyre Pressure Monitoring System fitted standard to some of Jayco's caravans, toy haulers and hybrid campers.
The tire pressure monitoring system alerts owners when there's a pressure problem or a leak in the tyre, which “minimises issues or tyre blowouts while on the road,” according to Jayco.
Also new on Jayco’s pricier caravans is a Projecta Intelli-Jay power management system, which offers a “complete power management solution, allowing travellers the freedom to control and monitor lighting, electrical and water systems, from a smart phone or tablet through Bluetooth,” according to Jayco.
A single 100Ah lithium battery is also now standard on all Jayco Silverline and All Terrain models, while Journey caravan and CrossTrak hybrid models feature new front moulds. Jayco caravan models also benefit from a new sandwich panel roof.
As reported last year, Jayco has dropped the cut-price Chinese/Australian-built JTRAK tent trailer from its popular camper trailer line-up. It's also announced pricing for the new Jayco CrossHaul compact toy hauler, which starts at $23,990 including JTECH suspension, 100Ah battery, bag awning, toolbox and storage tubs.
As is the case with many Australian RV manufacturers, prices have increased across the 2021 Jayco model range.
For example, the Jayco All Terrain full height off-road caravan range now kicks off at $66,290 for the 15ft version (a price increase of around $4000), while All Terrain pop-tops have risen by around $2500 depending on variant.
The starting price of the entry-level 19ft Jayco Starcraft caravan has also increased by $3300 to $50,590, while 16ft versions of the CrossTrak hybrid camper are up slightly, with prices starting from $44,290.
