The stylish new Volkswagen Crafter-based Kampervan that's converted by Jayco and sold exclusively in Volkswagen dealerships has proven a big hit with buyers.
According to the commercial vehicle arm of Volkswagen in Australia, all 69 examples in the first production run of Crafter Kampervans were sold in just three days, after it was unveiled publicly at this year's NSW Caravan Camping Holiday Supershow.
Keen buyers who missed out will have to wait until 2023 when another batch is due for production.
Based on the VW Crafter 35 Long Wheelbase delivery van, the Jayco-modified Kampervan is 6.8 metres long, 2.0 metres wide and comes with seating for four, sleeping for three, multiple dining and seating areas, a bathroom including toilet and shower, and a full kitchen.
Standard features include a reverse-cycle air-conditioner, a diesel space heater, TV and stereo with inside and outside speakers, LED internal and external lighting, a roll-out awning and a wifi extender.
All three Kampervan models in the range come with a TDI410 turbo-diesel engine, eight-speed automatic transmission and 4MOTION all-wheel drive with diff lock, while the top-spec model adds All-Terrain off-road capability.
Pricing starts at $150,440 plus on-road costs for the entry-level Kampervan Style with alloy wheels and two-tone paint.
“It is designed to go off-grid,” VW Commercial product marketing manager Ben Triebels explained at a media event last week.
“We have got two lithium batteries in there at 120 amp hour each. We’ve got a solar panel on the roof and a 1500-Watt inverter so you can run household appliances on it as well.”
“We are looking at what we can do next, how can we expand what we are doing with the campervan series. It’s an exciting partnership and it’s been great to add to our campervan portfolio.”
The Crafter Kampervan Style Pre-Production Prototype was one of a number of modified vehicles that the commercial vehicle arm of Volkswagen in Australia rolled out as part of an expanded range of turnkey solutions for specialist requirements.
The factory-backed mobility, cargo and recreational solutions announced for Caddy and Crafter are sold through Volkswagen dealers and accompanied by a factory five-year warranty.
