Jayco has officially added three new variants to its popular All Terrain caravan family for 2023, with the latest Jayco All Terrain Off-Grid X boasting the comprehensive off-grid power system that was previously launched as an option at last year’s Brisbane caravan show.
The Off-Grid X system is now available as a standard inclusion in all three All Terrain models: a 19-foot couple’s van, and 19ft and 22ft family vans. Furthermore, the Off-Grid X package will slowly be rolled out to other models across the Jayco family, the company says.
caravancampingsales recently inspected the All Terrain Off-Grid X 19.61-3, the 19-foot family van, during a media event at Jayco headquarters in Dandenong South, in Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs.
While the new models are essentially regular All Terrains, they now boast the new one-piece and better insulated PET flooring also found in Jayco’s new 2023 Silverline, while the Off-Grid X variants also come standard with a rear firewood rack, as well as the additional power system.
“We’ve found more and more of our customers wanted to go further afield and spend time off-grid, so they need that [additional] power capability,” explained Jayco Promotions & Competitions Manager, Chris Hooper.
Developed in conjunction with power management specialist, Projecta, the Off-Grid X package comprises a 400Ah lithium battery with 180A AC charging capability and 40A DC to DC charging, a 3000W inverter, and 600W of solar panels (three 200W panels) on the roof, along with a 60Ah solar regulator.
There’s also a power input for additional solar panels or blankets, for times when the van itself may be situated in shade.
“With that 3000W inverter, when you turn that on you can use all the powerpoints in the caravan,” she said. “You can run the hair dryer, you can run the hair straightener, the coffee machine – not all at once, but you can run them.
“And, in the right conditions, this (set-up) will run your air-conditioner for a short period of time. So, if you’re out in the bush and it’s really hot during the day and you need to cool the van down at night to get to sleep, you can do that.”
The majority of the hardware is stored underneath the main bed, while the system can be coordinated by a colour touchscreen, located on the offside wall just forward of the cabinet that houses the switch for the inverter.
The touchscreen allows users to view the van’s power status, solar input, tank levels and more. There’s a digital level to help owners to adjust the van’s height and orientation when setting up, while tyre pressure monitoring is available as an option.
Jayco says the system is compatible with a number of other 12V accessories, available through RV accessories business, Coast to Coast Caravan & Leisure.
“We approached Projecta and basically told them, ‘We’ve got this requirement from our customer base – this is what we want to build, so it does air-con, a coffee machine, a hair dryer etc’, and this is what they came back with,” he said.
“The uptake on this has actually been really quite surprising. The amount of people who want to go off-grid, the amount of people who don’t want to camp next to someone else anymore – they want to be out in the bush; they want to be on their own.”
The Off-Grid X package essentially adds $13,000 to the standard price of an All Terrain model, with the three new variants priced at $101,790, $102,790 and $107,790 drive away respectively.
“When you think about it, if you’re a family on the road travelling for a couple of years, you can make that [additional investment] back in saving on caravan park fees,” he said.
As to where the Off-Grid X power package may appear next, Jayco is remaining tight-lipped.
“We’re getting calls for this system now in quite a few variants across our range. But we’ll satisfy the off-road market first before we put it out anywhere else.”
