Melbourne Leisurefest, which opens at Melbourne’s Sandown Racecourse on Thursday this week (October 5-9), will be a great shopping opportunity for caravanners keen to maximise their dollars over the traditional summer/school holiday travelling season ahead.
Slowing caravan sales and a rationalisation of models are amongst the trends that caravan buyers can expect to impact on prices in 2018, with Leisurefest and the smaller following Pre-Christmas Caravan and Camping Sale at the Brisbane showgrounds a fortnight later (October 26-29) representing major retail events to reap savings.
Market leader Jayco is currently reviewing potential price increases for 2018 and will be keen to fill order books following its annual Summer Upgrade sale that officially finished at the weekend. As they say in the trade, try twisting a dealer’s arm. . .
Emerging volume rival New Age has stated that “our prices will not be rising in 2018”, while Concept, which builds Concept, Franklin and Newlands caravans, also says it’s currently holding prices, potentially giving both a marketing edge. However privately, neither wishes to lose a sale to Jayco and will be keen to deal.
Those who have declared 2018 price rises are mainly the niche builders.
In Melbourne, 22 year-old off-road custom builder Trakmaster has already raised its prices by 10 per cent for 2018, but has balanced this by introduced two new fixed-price models – the timber-framed and ribbed aluminium clad Flinders and full composite-walled Pilbara S – with limited layout and specification choices to achieve greater volume and profitability.
However, the company’s Project Manager Ron Larkin says they will be meeting potential buyers ‘half-way” on the new prices at Leisurefest, while offering free upgrades such as grey water tanks and other items as bonuses on some models.
Meanwhile on the Sunshine Coast, Australian Off Road will increase the prices of its off-road hybrids, Supercampers and tandem-axle Aurora caravan by 3-4 per cent across the board from November 1.
AOR’s General Manager Russell Evans said this will be a discussion item with potential purchasers at the Melbourne Leisurefest and Brisbane shows with those prepared to place an order.
