Is this Australia's fastest campervan conversion kit?

Social media is awash with DIY campervan conversions, but unless you're flush with time, patience and the right tools, turning a humble delivery van into your dream holiday-on-wheels involves a lot more sweat and tears than your average vanlife Youtube video would suggest.

Unless your budget stretches to a 'turn key' camper conversion, there's another relatively stress-free and affordable alternative with Melbourne start-up Fin Campers offering 'plug and play' removable camper kits for owners of Volkswagen Transporter commercial vans.

Launched less than 12 months ago, the Melbourne designed and built Fin Campers' range includes four basic options that will help turn the van's empty rear cargo space into a camping-mobile within minutes.

"After countless hours of ideation and development, we've created a first-of-its-kind modular campervan kit ready for work or play in minutes," said company founder Barney Pienaar back in April, 2021. A qualified mechanical engineer, Barney said he was inspired by local campervan kits as well as the many portable camping modules available in Europe.

The four Fin portable camping kits available include the Flex Bed Modules, which includes three specially designed 'crates' that combine to form a comfortable bench seat/lounge that easily converts to a 1.8m long double bed.

Another option is the Kitchen Pod, which incorporates a stainless steel basin and hand pump faucet with integrated plumbing, 10L fresh and 10L waste water canisters, a prep surface extension and storage for a portable cooktop and cutlery.

There's also the Wheel Storage Unit, which Fin Campers describes as a "tidy storage solution for the passenger side wheel house. The original vehicle jack position is maintained, with enough leftover space for all your lengthy equipment".

For more storage another option is the Utility Cabinet, that runs along the driver's side interior wall and boasts "10 large compartments and an innovative cleat wall system. The cleats allow you to hang a wide variety of accessories, from small storage boxes to work/dining surface".

All modular units are beautifully designed and constructed using 12mm premium birch timber, with a two tone white/natural film finish to provide water and stain resistance. They're also easy to remove when you want to use the van's cargo space for something else, with just a few bolts that screw into floor-mounted anchor points to hold the Flex Bed modules in place, for example.

Individual pricing is $3799 for the Flex Bed Modules, $1799 for the Kitchen Pod, $899 for the Wheel Storage Unit and $3499 for the Utility Cabinet.

For those who want something more permanent, Fin Campers is also offering complete vehicle fit-outs for the T5/T6 Volkswagen Transporter LWD model, similar to one displayed recently at the Mornington Great Outdoor and 4x4 Expo in Victoria.

Priced from $23,990, the full vehicle fit-outs include the removable bed box and mattress, kitchen pod, and other cabinetry, along with an AGM battery system, fridge module with 60 litre fridge, ply roof and interior carpet lining, a folding table and an engineering motorhome conversion certificate.

A range of options are also available including the Reimo pop-top roof and Thule roll-out awning as shown on the display vehicle. While focussing on the Transporter, Fin Campers will also undertake custom fit-outs of other vans upon request.
