How to overtake a road train
Like poisonous snakes, you need to follow a few rules when dealing with those Outback giants of the roadThere is a plethora of information written about traveling through Outback Australia, from the best sights to see off the beaten track through to the cheapest fuel stops, friendliest caravan parks and most scenic and tranquil campsites.
Yet there’s little information available on one of the most common sights that motorists encounter on their outback journeys and that is the unique Australian road train.
Encountering these behemoths of the highway can be quite intimidating, particularly for the first time on an outback road, let alone trying to overtake them safely.
Modern high productivity road trains can be up 60m in length with a gross combination mass of up to 200 tonne. They travel at up to 90km/h and can take up to two kilometres to come to a stop.
These vehicles provide an extremely efficient means of transporting bulk commodities which enables Australian industries to export competitively to the world market.
Earlier this year a group of transport operators along with truck manufacturer Kenworth teamed up to compose an information video on how caravanners and other road users can overtake a road train safely, in three easy steps.
