Horizon clocks 600th sale

NSW campervan specialist on a roll, selling 100 van conversions over the past 18 months
More evidence has emerged that Australia’s subdued motorhome market is bouncing back, with Horizon Motorhomes announcing the sale of its 600th motorhome this month.
While that’s not remarkable in itself, considering the Ballina, NSW-based manufacturer has been operating for around 20 years, it is when considering close to 20 per cent of those sales occurred over the past 18 months.
“We sold our 500th motorhome in June 2015 so have sold 100 motorhomes in the last 18 months,” said Horizon's boss Clayton Kearney. “This is an indicator of the demand for our product increasing since mid-2015. Two years ago we were producing approximately 50 a year.”
Unlike some of the bigger motorhome manufacturers like Avida and now Jayco, which build a range of both the smaller, van-based campers as well as larger, cab-chassis based motorhomes, Horizon just focuses on the ‘built in’ campervan market, converting mostly front- drive Fiat Ducato and rear-drive Mercedes-Benz Sprinter commercial vans.
Another point of difference is a more ‘factory direct’ approach, with its only dealer, the Ballina Campervan & Motorhome Centre, located close to the main production facility.
The buyers of the 600th Horizon campervan, John and Lynette Andersen (pictured) travelled 500km from Queensland's Hervey Bay, to pick up their new 7.3m long Sprinter-based Grevillea campervan, which retails from $139,500 and is the largest model offered by Horizon.
Making the switch from a towable to motorised RV after researching the market for two years, the long-term caravanners said they were looking for something practical, with ample living space as well as enough height for John and his 6ft 1in frame.
Despite the recent success, the multi-award winning manufacturer has no immediate plans to expand its current, eight model range, or move into larger motorhomes. However, existing models should benefit from a few tweaks in 2017 including “plenty of modifications to improve the usability, driven by customer feedback”.
“We are excited to see what 2017 will bring us, as we ramp up production capabilities in our new service and manufacturing site and look forward to the sale of our 700th motorhome,” Kearney said.
