With the coronavirus crisis putting a temporary stop to non-essential travel, including holiday stays at campgrounds and caravan parks, the Caravan Industry Association of Australia is urging people to set up camp at home during the Easter break.
"Normally this time of year is when many Australian families would usually be packing up the camping gear and preparing to hit the road, with upwards of 300,000 Australians usually camping over the Easter Weekend.," the Association said on its website.
For the past week the CIAA has been pushing a ‘Camp at Home Heroes' initiative on social media, encouraging outdoor enthusiasts to send in photo examples of home camping, from firing up a campfire in the backyard to dropping a fishing line in the pool.
"(The) 'Camp at Home Heroes' is a fun, educational, family based and socially responsible campaign that asks our community to camp at home this year, this ensuring people stay connected with the caravan and camping lifestyle and with their immediate families over the Easter break," the CIAA said.
"It is important that the highly aspirational attitude towards caravanning and camping remains alive and well, and (that includes) 'keeping the spirit of camping' active over the Easter period, despite people unable to undertake their normal caravanning or camping activities over this holiday break..." explained the CIAA.
Last year an estimated 30,000 recreational vehicles were sold in Australia, at a time when RV registrations across the country surpassed 700,000.
