Queensland suspension and coupling specialist manufacturer Vehicle Components has slimmed down its popular Hitchmaster DO35 drop-on, off-road coupling to allow it to work better with a wider range of towbar tongues and weight distribution hitches.
The 2017 DO35 V3 retains the 3.5 tonne rating and same benefits of its V2 predecessor, but features a lighter cast body and has forged steel components, with VC claiming that the coupling is even stronger than before.
The forged towpin on the V3 has removed the need for Weight Distribution Hitch (WDH) adaptors, while with its patented pin design it also doesn’t have to meet Australia’s stringent 50mm ball height requirements – a welcome freedom for some high-riding off-road caravans.
The more compact coupling also allows it to fit a wider variety of towbars without fouling the tongue of some Hayman Reese and OEM tongues. A reflector is now built into the coupling’s forward edge for easier identiation at night.
Like its predecessors, the DO35 V3 has 360-degree rotation, which reduces roll-over risk for an off-road rig. Its two-stage stage ADR-compliant locking mechanism eliminates the risk of inadvertant de-coupling, while its quiet operation is claimed to reduces mechabical clatter when towing.
As with previous DO-35 couplings, the latest version has been exhaustively tested as part of VC’s annual RAT (Remote Area Testing) RUN programme.
It will be offered as standard equipment on a number of the latest off-road caravans and camper trailers – notably Track Trailer’s all-new fifth generation Tvan Mk V that will be launched during July.
As with its predecessors, the Australian-made DO35 V3 is offered with a two-year manufacturer’s warranty. RRP is $437.50 from the
