Hema Navigator

Brisbane-based Hema Maps has just released the Hema Navigator, an in-car navigation system that doesn't stop at the bitumen

The $990 unit, produced in partnership with VMS, has Navteq voice-activated navigation that includes all of Hema's offroad data, as well as the usual city and highway information (with speed and red-light camera positions) found in other units. It comes preloaded with OziExplorer software and is compatible with Memory-Map, and the user can add their own Australian or overseas data in either of those formats through the included USB cable.

Rob Boegheim, managing director of Hema Maps, says, "We've listened to the 4WD and touring market and built them a GPS unit that's just right for them." In practice this means a plug-and-play, 4.3in touch-screen item that's claimed to be simple to operate and gets you to just about anywhere in the country.

The 2GB SD card has Hema's Australia 4WD maps and all of the highly detailed, 1:250,000 topographical maps from the government's Geoscience Australia Natmap series. Also included in the package are windscreen mounting, a leather carry case and 12V/240V power supplies, along with Australian-based tech support by phone and online.
