Looking to buy a second-hand caravan or RV, but need some guidance on the most important things to consider before handing over your hard-earned money?
Help is at hand from The Caravan Council of Australia, which has compiled a handy, free checklist to assist potential buyers of second-hand 'vans and other recreational vehicles.
According to the fledgling consumer advocacy group, which was set up in late-2012 by former RVM Australia employee Colin Young, using the nine-page guide will help “ensure that any intended purchase - caravan or camper-trailer - is fully-compliant, safe, and in good condition”.
According to The Caravan Council: “The checklist is quite comprehensive, and buyers may wish to refer to VSB-1 on some compliance items, or have a technical person assist them with the inspection”.
The Vehicle Standards Bulletin (VSB-1) is issued by the Federal Government and covers requirements when manufacturing trailers of less than 4.5 tonnes ATM.
The checklist pays great attention to ‘ratings and masses’, which the Council insists “are a vital consideration, to ensure that the intended tow-vehicle can legally and safely tow the 'van/trailer”.
