Keeping items of different shapes and sizes safely in place on a roof rack or in a ute load bed can be a challenge on a trip, particularly when rough roads are involved.
However an American made, but Australian improved product – the Gorilla Net – solves the problem in an elegant manner.
Initially designed for military and mining applications, the Gorilla Net consists of a web of heavy-duty rip-stop mesh fabric that’s attached to the roof rack or tray edges by large coated hooks and pulled down tight by cam buckles.
The roof-rack Gorilla Net comes in three sizes to suit trays of 1.2 x 1.2m, 1.2 x 1.8m and 1.58 x 2.58m. Each features 38mm webbing rated at 554kg per 2.5cm, while the finer mesh in between the web straps has a 126kg/2.5cm rating.
Tough eyelet anchor points (four on smaller rack nets and six on larger ones) ensure that all manner of items from tents to gas bottles and even spare wheels and jerry cans can all be secured on the rack without the need for individual anchoring mounts or tie-downs.
And by anecdotal reports, when you’ve unpacked the roof-rack, your Gorilla Net makes an excellent camp hammock!
The largest Gorilla Nets for light truck and ute beds are available in sizes up to 5.6 x 3.16m and feature webbing rated at 554kg/2.5cm.
Gorille Nets are available from major 4WD and outdoor supply shops such as ARB and TJM, with prices starting from $150 inc GST with additional tie-down straps and hooks available from $18.95/pair.
