Off-road RV specialist Goldstream has sold its 1000th pop-top caravan, in the same year that the Pakenham, Victoria manufacturer is celebrating its 25th year of local production.
The 1000th pop-top – a 17ft 6in EWB Bunk model with smooth, silver grey aluminium body sides with black checkerplate and fitted with the optional Panther off-road pack – was handed over to its new owners this week at a low-key ceremony held at Goldstream’s service facility, attended by media and the local mayor.
Rob and Penny Cumming and their one- and two-year-old daughters, drove from Stratford, Victoria in their Nissan Patrol to pick up their new $60,000 pop-top, which has a Tare weight of 1900kg and ATM of 2500kg.
Rob Cumming said they chose the Goldstream due to its rough-road capability and the company’s reputation for strong build quality and after-sales back-up.
“We wanted it to be family friendly but still be able to take it down off-road tracks,” he said.
The couple upgraded from a camper trailer, and chose an interior layout that includes an east-west queen bed, L-shaped dinette, galley kitchen and triple bunk beds for the kids.
“We don’t have any immediate travel plans but would like to travel up the west coast in a few years’ time. We wanted to get the van now while they’re still little and enjoy it over the next 10 years,” he said.
As well as the optional Panther pack, which includes a host of extras including twin 80 litre water tanks, twin batteries, off-road hitch, rear camera, roll-out awning and external shower, the pop-top was fitted with airbag suspension so it could be lowered sufficiently to allow storage under a carport when not being used.
Specialising in off-road capable models, Goldstream RV has sold approximately 5000 of its trademark Jayco-style camper trailers over the past 25 years, as well as around 500 full-height caravans.
However, with increased demand for pop-top models, they currently comprise around 50 per cent of all Goldstream production, which is around 10 units a week.
