Goldstream reveals fresh new look

Melbourne manufacturer unveils new-look '20th Anniversary' models sporting glossy aluminium exteriors and fresh flat-pack interiors
Goldstream RV has pulled the wraps off its new-look range of caravans, camper trailers and pop-tops, a week before their public debut at the Victorian Caravan, Camping & Touring Supershow.
The revamped range, which features the latest ‘flat pack’ furniture, modern interior finishes and ultra smooth composite aluminium bodies, was revealed at a special 20th year celebration event at Goldstream RV’s service centre in Pakenham, Victoria.
According to Goldstream’s production manager Russell Willmott, the “sharper look” of the updated '20th anniversary' models is courtesy of glossy new composite body panels, which comprise an internal rubber core for strength, 19mm foam insulation and 4mm thick painted aluminium on both sides.
The biggest visual changes, though, are inside. Goldstream RV recently installed state-of-the-art CNC furniture cutting machinery at its Pakenham factory, which has resulted in the latest, apartment-style ‘flat pack’ furniture built from 16mm lightweight board sourced overseas.
“It’s built exactly like a kitchen in your house,” Mr Willmott said. “We’re trying to bring the house look into the van.”
Adding to the contemporary look is a new range of latest interior colours and finishes, including ‘sound acoustic’ lino flooring, new-look upholstery and curtains, new door locks and handles, and high-gloss laminex for the square-edge benchtops.
While admitting the new computerised cutting machine and edge bander were a “massive purchase” for the company, Mr Willmott said it would significantly reduce costs in what is traditionally the most labour-intensive part of RV production.  
Whereas it previously took two workers, up to four days to build the furniture for one caravan, the new computerised system will cut that down to just four hours.
Goldstream RV, which builds around 400 RVs each year, is the latest Australian RV manufacturer to adopt more efficient computerised mass-production processes, following the likes of Concept Caravans and Jurgens.
“There are a few other companies at the moment going down this line. I think it is the future of caravan manufacturing,” he said.
He expects the investment to pay off within two years, depending on demand for the new-look models. The company will continue to offer the traditional interior on some models “because we’ve still got customers who want the old furniture”.
Goldstream is also working on a new ‘one-panel’ roof with full aluminium sides for its camper trailers, which is expected to roll out within months. As well as being less labour intensive, it “will give (the camper) that sharper look when the roof is closed”. 
“The roof will come in sections, so instead of taking a guy a whole day to build that roof, we can probably put that roof together in a couple of hours,” he said.
Full specifications and pricing of the new ‘20th Anniversary’ models, will be announced at the Victorian Caravan, Camping & Touring Supershow, at Caulfield Racecourse from March 7-12.
