Get a Clearview while towing

Aussie invention gives tow vehicle owners the option of factory-style, extendable mirrors

Tow mirrors are an important safety requirement when towing big caravans and boats, but with many requiring strap-ons or mounting bars across the bonnet they can be a hassle to fit not to mention unsightly.

Inspired by the clever, aftermarket replacement items available in the USA for a range of pick-ups and SUVs, Mike Cowan of Clearview Towing Mirrors has come up with a neat solution for the most popular tow vehicles in Australia.

Five years in development, the Clearview mirrors give four-wheel-drive owners full electric adjustment and factory-look styling in a mirror which can be extended instantly for towing.

Each Clearview model is developed for a specific SUV so it mounts in the original position and uses the same electric adjustment.

The mirrors are much bigger than standard, and have a convex lower section to complement the electrically adjustable main section, but retain a sleek, integrated appearance.

The road legal mirrors, sit 108 mm wider than standard when retracted, and slide out a further 114 mm for towing, giving a clear view past the side of the caravan.

All the electrics work from the vehicle’s existing switches, and there are special manual models for the 100 Series LandCruiser base models and GU Patrol utes which have manual mirrors.

They’re designed to stay in adjustment even when caught in the turbulence of a passing road train, but can be folded back (or forward) to avoid impact damage or for extra clearance.

The first models available are for Toyota LandCruiser 100 and Nissan GU Patrol, in a choice of chrome or textured black finish. A LandCruiser 200 series model is due next month, followed by the Prado 120 model in December. The mirrors cost $660 a pair for electric operated versions.
