More than 50 Geist caravans and their owners are expected to come together for the third Geist Gathering at the Garden of Eden Caravan Park in Eden, New South Wales, early next year.
Organised by the Geist Owners Club of Australia, the gathering could prove bigger than this year’s in Maleny, Queensland, which attracted 39 vans making it one of the largest gatherings ever of privately-owned Geist caravans in the world.
The German-built Geist RVs were imported to Australia by Oakhurst International Caravans until March 2009, before Oakhurst was placed into receivership with reported debts of up to $11 million.
About 70 Geist caravans and motorhomes held at dealerships were sold at auctions in Sydney and Brisbane to help recoup funds for creditors and the future of the brand Down Under remains in doubt.
Former Geist national development manager in Australia Peter Treasure, who runs an enthusiast website for Geist owners around the world, said he started the Geist owners club to enable likeminded individuals to “share ideas, experiences and have a good dose of fun at the same time”.
“These events have proven to not only be great fun but allow us all to ask questions and mix with people with similar interests as well as share information on travelling and our Geist vans,” he said. “It is as much a social event as learning from each other.”
The week-long Geist Gathering will run from February 9 to 16 and incorporate different activities each day including golf, fishing, tennis, a boat cruise, as well as BBQ dinners, a camp fire sing-along, plus updates from the world of Geist and presentations on caravanning in general.
