With Jayco-imported Airstream caravans in 'run out' mode at dealers, it's slim pickings in Australia at the moment for potential buyers of the iconic American-built polished aluminium travel trailers.
However, cashed-up enthusiasts could be in luck with a near-new, special-edition 27ft Airstream caravan currently up for grabs in the Sunshine State.
Popular with Hollywood celebrities and fashionistas, the 89-year-old Airstream brand is known for occasionally teaming up with fashion brands and designers, with the result in this case the limited-run “Relax Edition Tommy Bahama" Airstream which "oozes coastal style and island themed living" according to the brochure at the time.
Along with the usual Airstream touches like curved, riveted aluminium bodywork and porthole-style windows, the Tommy Bahama Edition got the full coastal-theme interior makeover including special finishes for the seating, kitchen and bathroom walls, along with Plantation shutters, yacht-style flooring, oiled-bronze residential tapware and leather drawer handles.
Along with luxury features like a Polk audio system and dual zone, ducted climate control system, the spacious four-berth layout also included a "rear sport hatch for immersive views and easy loading/unloading of oversized equipment such as bikes or kayaks".
Also part of the package were "breezy, island-inspired Tommy Bahama" accessories including chairs, esky and towels, along with fishing-themed door graphics and a striped 'Tommy Bahama' awning which, like the corner stabilisers was power operated.
'Happy Hour' was catered for with a blue-lit wine bar with a built-in ice maker and ice tub for the beers, plus a purpose-built storage for the tumblers and wine glasses.
The 2017-model 'Tommy Bahama' Airstream was advertised at US$114,600 (approx. $144,000 Australian dollars) when released in the USA, and with Jayco wanting $170,000 for its 'plain Jane' 22ft Airstream, the $230,000 asking price for the special Queensland van seems about right.
While fully built in the US, the "one of a kind" caravan should be right to go with a current roadworthy certificate, Australian gas and electrical certification and 12 months registration included, according to the seller.
While not for everyone, the 27ft Airstream would make a very stylish and comfortable touring caravan for a Big Lap, or appealing rental or accommodation option if you wanted to recoup some of the upfront costs...
