More and more people are combining work with travelling around in an RV, but few have gone as far as a New Zealand business that converted an old caravan into a stylish mobile office.
Combining a desire to enjoy more of the great outdoors with the ability to travel and work directly on different project sites, New Zealand architectural firm Studio106 recently converted a retro van into a towable, well-ventilated office, complete with large swing up side door, foldable desks and other portable furniture.
Working with local business Retro Events, the conversion took just seven days, with the nine square metre indoor work area now featuring a retractable wall, office equipment including computers, recyclable Refold cardboard desks and an art-inspired ceiling installation comprised of scrunched up paper.
Studio106's director Dion Gosling and interior designer Kerri Cunliffe told Gizmag.com that the idea for a mobile office came from the age-old workers' dream to “chase the good weather around”.
“Simply relocating to a smaller space by the sea side just wasn't as appealing as something on wheels – it really spoke to the exploration and freedom of summer road trips that we had all just enjoyed over the break. The caravan felt like an extension of the summer holiday whilst sneaking work into the mix," they said.
"The inside was 9m2, which was a significant reduction from our 95m2 office in the city. But it didn't feel that small due to the ability to open up one side of the caravan and extend the office out."
