The caravan is a brand new Gecko ‘expander’ full height family model from New Age Caravans, complete with pop-out front double bed, triple bunks, well-equipped kitchen, air-conditioner and separate shower and toilet, all in a compact and lightweight 16ft, single axle package.

For this Top End adventure, I’ve allowed around nine days to drive ‘solo’ from Melbourne to Adelaide, then straight up the Stuart Highway (or ‘Track as the locals call it), stopping at Alice Springs, Tennant Creek, Katherine and and other well-known attractions along the way. In Darwin I will be joined by the family and continue on the well-worn ‘loop’ through the iconic Kakadu and Litchfield National Parks…
It’s a ‘bucket list’ trip for many caravanners, and apart from the distance (3700km from Melbourne-Darwin alone) is accessible to most RV travellers as it's bitumen roads as well as good tracks in and out of many of the campsites and attractions…
