FROM BOTTOM TO TOP: End of the road

We hand the keys to a true professional at the end of our 6000km caravan trip
If you’ve been keen enough to follow this multi-part travel 'blog' over the past couple weeks, you might have wondered why it’s titled ‘From bottom to top’ and not ‘From bottom to top and back’, or something similar.
After all, towing a van all the way from Melbourne to Darwin to visit some Top End attractions is not normally the end of the road when at the end of all the fun you have to return the rig and occupants back to their homes in Melbourne.
But Darwin is the end of the road, at least for us, thanks to the terrific service offered by Queensland-based Caravan Relocation Services (CRS). We first heard about CRS in 2014, and since then 'one man band' Anthony Thomas has conducted hundreds of successful relocations of caravans as well as boat trailers around Australia, resulting in many happy customers by all accounts.
Like other time-poor caravanners with the pressures of family and work commitments, getting to see all the sights on our Top End trip would have been close to impossible in the three and a half weeks allotted if we’d had to drive both legs… not to mention exhausting, at more than 10,000km driving all up!
Instead, we clocked a far more relaxing 6100km before handing the keys to Tony in Darwin and meeting him again seven days later in Melbourne. That allowed us to spend a few more relaxing days in the sunny NT capital, before hopping on a plane and picking up the relocated rig just outside Melbourne Airport.
Apart from the substantial time saving, Tony lived up to his ‘cheap and cheerful’ service promise, providing nightly text updates (when in mobile range) and safely delivering the $150,000 rig (while not ruining his record of never being in an accident or receiving a traffic fine in almost 50 years working in the transport industry!)
Sure, it’s not an inexpensive option (you pay all Tony’s expenses including flights if required plus a daily fee), but it’s still cheaper than hiring a truck transporter, not to mention far more convenient, flexible and personal (Tony saved me another half day of post-trip driving by going out of his way to pick up the family dog from a kennel near Bendigo on the way through).
If like us, you’re time poor or just want a reliable relocation of your caravan or boat, anywhere in Australia, it's worth checking out the CRS website.
FOOTNOTE: Look out for full reviews of the Toyota LandCruiser and New Age Gecko van in coming days, not to mention other product tests and advice about Top End travel…
