Free towing course for newbies

Camperland clinic tells you what you weren’t game to ask

Towing a caravan for the first time can be a terrifying experience for those whose previous travel has been mainly suburban. Legally matching tow car and van, loading them correctly, hitching up, then negotiating highways, byways and tourist parks is stressful for many new to this way of life.

To de-mystify the experience, major Queensland Jayco dealership, Brisbane Camperland, is running two free ‘How to tow a caravan’ information sessions this Saturday (February 15) at its recently refurbished Wynnum Road, Tingalpa premises.

Run by industry experts, Dave Lewis of Weightcheck, Gary Gardiner of Hayman-Reese and Jeff Palmer of TowEd, each 90-minute session commencing at 9.00am and 11.30am will run through all the basics of hitching and un-hitching a caravan, correct weight distribution and how to deal with tricky, unexpected situations, with a further 30 minutes allowed after each session for questions.

Caravan newbies are invited to attend free sessions at Camperland

No caravan towing knowledge is assumed, making the sessions ideal for couples or solo travellers to learn the basics in a friendly, inclusive environment.

Participants come from all walks of life and are not required to be Camperland customers, with the aim of the courses being “to make people feel safe and comfortable when towing", according to Brisbane Camperland Managing Director, Joshua Carnavas.

To best demonstrate the hitching and unhitching process, the presenters will use a new Jayco Journey Deluxe caravan and a Jeep Grand Cherokee, representing the sort of rig many people would aspire to.

Up to 50 people are being catered for in each group, with under-shelter seating, food and refreshments provided, with a lot of couples currently enrolled.

Encourages by the response to this first clinic, Brisbane Camperland is hoping to run similar clinics in the future, some of which may focus on single travellers and women.

If you're interested in attending Saturday’s or future caravan information sessions, contact Karen at Brisbane Camperland, 1459 Wynnum Road, Tingalpa, on (07) 3917 5555.
