Step into most van-based motorhome conversions in Australia and you’ll see a very familiar layout: dinette, kitchen and perhaps shower/toilet towards the front, and a lounge/double bed up back, close to the swing-out doors.
However, Melbourne’s Sunliner has bucked the trend with its latest high-roof campervan conversion, squeezing a larger motorhome-style layout of front drop-down electric bed, lounge/dinette, kitchen and rear bathroom into the more compact dimensions of a 6.0m long Ford Transit 350L LWD FWD commercial van.
The higher roof on the Ford Transit has allowed Sunliner to fit a drop-down queen bed, which stored up against the ceiling, allows decent headroom as well as access to a spacious dinette area including two lounges and a large table.
A small kitchen area separates the living space from a stylish combination shower/toilet in one half of the rear section, that sits opposite a wall-mounted storage cupboard.
Sunliner marketing manager Candice Brittain said the European-style layout should appeal to single travelers seeking a well-equipped but driver-friendly motorhome, as well as business travelers requiring a large 'work station'. The 1800kg towing capacity also allows the option of towing a decent-sized trailer.
The first ‘prototype’ of the new Sunliner Rialta Drop-Down model is currently on display at Sunliner’s Melbourne RV dealership, priced sharply at $99,000. For that you get the 125kW/405Nm 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine matched to a six-speed auto, along with a heated, 10-way adjustable driver’s seat and safety features including a reversing camera and front and rear parking sensors.
Appliances fitted include an 81 litre compressor fridge, two-burner gas cooker and sink (both with glass lids), microwave, LED lighting, two deep cycle batteries, cassette toilet, hot water shower, roof hatch, ducted heater and air-conditioner.
The new Sunliner Rialta campervan only has seat-belts for the two front passengers, and the GVM is 3350kg.
