It’s the ever-present fear of any owner of a pop-top caravan or camper trailer; forgetting to secure the roof latches properly, or a latch failing and the roof lifting up and blowing away while speeding down the highway…
But that’s exactly what happened recently to the owner of a pop-top camper travelling along the Hume Highway in Campbellfield, Sydney, and the dramatic aftermath was captured on a dash-cam by a following motorist.
Travelling in the centre of the three-lane highway, the unlucky RV traveler would have been horrified to look into the rear view mirror and see the roof of the camper disappear into the distance...
Luckily, the motorist that captured the footage moved into the inside lane just seconds before the roof peeled away, narrowly avoiding impact with the flying debris. Apparently others travelling behind also managed to avoid any damage.
Not surprisingly, the 35-second video posted on the Dash Cam Owners Australia Facebook page has been watched more than 300,000 times, and shared more than 1300 times.
The dramatic footage has also attracted more than 1000 comments, with some blaming the general poor quality of pop-fitting fittings while others highlighting the importance of checking all clips are in good order before setting off.
Others pointed the finger at the unfortunate caravanner, who was travelling in the centre lane rather than obeying the ‘Keep left unless overtaking’ road rule…
