Fishing Tip: Fill your reel

Fishing advice provided by iFish TV

Fishing reels come in various sizes, allowing you to pick the appropriate one for your exact needs. A 1000 perfect for squid fishing, and a 7000 great for the surf, as a general rule.

Once you have picked your weapon of choice, make sure you fill it with the perfect amount of line. Too much line and you will struggle with casting, get terrible knotting and on an overhead reel, possibly even break the line as it jams on the frame if you don't lay it on perfectly.

In saying all this, under filling your reel is also a big mistake. You will not be able to cast effectively or as far as you should, the drag will not perform properly and in a worst case scenario you may even run out of line altogether on a big fish and lose the lot.

The red line on the spool (pictured) indicates the perfect amount of line for that reel. Make sure you load it with line within five percent (either side) of this mark and you will get the best out of your fishing rig.
