First Cub Campers caravan coming

Sydney camper manufacturer set to enter caravan market with new 16ft full-height off-roader

Sydney's Cub Campers is set to release its first full-size caravan after more than 50 years of manufacturing tent-style campers.

While no specific details or images of the new Cub Caravan have been officially released yet, the all-new 16ft (body length) full-height off-road model is expected to be fitted with many of the luxuries found in modern off-road caravans including an internal ensuite, inside and outside kitchens, air-conditioning, heating and other latest technology.

Cub produced horse floats in the early days

Like other Cub models the new composite caravan is also expected to be designed to cope with rugged off-road conditions, with coil or airbag independent suspension, all-terrain tyres and an off-road coupling, together with the latest lithium battery and solar panel set-up for off-grid travel.

Cub currently builds seven hard-floor fold-out camper trailers at its busy Sydney production facility, including the fully Australian-built double-fold Drifter II model, and it's believed a new production line is being set up for the Cub caravans in the former retail showroom area at the front of Cub's Sydney headquarters.

The closest Cub has come to producing a fully enclosed, fixed roof trailer was a number of horse floats that were sold in the early days. More recently it also built a hybrid-style hard-walled camper called the Supavan.

Cub is one of Australia's oldest RV brands and one of the last remaining local tent trailer manufacturers, with most of the fabrication and assembly of its campers taking place in its multi-million dollar Sydney factory.

Production versions of the new 16ft caravan are expected to cost close to double that of Cub's most expensive current model, the Drifter, which retails for around $60,000.

Cub is planning to release its first caravan after 54 years of camper production

Usually quick to react and adapt to market trends, Cub Campers’ CEO Simon McMillan hinted a few years back that Cub was working on new model variants including the possibility of a full-size caravan.

Australian-built caravans have been big sellers down under in recent times, with more than 20,000 caravans produced in Australia in 2021. It's believed Cub currently builds around 400-500 campers a year.

“We're always looking at new styles and have some new models coming out in the next 12 to 24 months. Watch this space,” McMillan said during an interview in 2018.

Cub Campers is expected to release full details including pricing of the new 16ft caravan in early-October.
