Fire and Rescue NSW is urging thousands of holiday makers who will spend the first weeks of the year camping or in caravans to be fire safe.
"There’s no secret that we love an Aussie adventure, and with borders opening, the time to shine is now," Fire and Rescue NSW said on social media.
"Before you hook up the caravan or string your fairy lights on your campervan, for the love of Russell Coight, make sure of the following...
"Ensure your caravan has a working smoke alarm as well as a fire extinguisher (dry chemical powder) and a fire blanket located near the exit...
"Ensure LPG cylinders are secured correctly to the caravan and that all fittings and hose lines are in good working order.
"Avoid using candles or open flames inside a caravan... Don't smoke inside caravans."
Other safety tips include:
>> Know the name of the park or the street name or location of your caravan in case you need to ring triple 000, or download the free “Emergency +” app to your smart phone, this free app is available from your app store and will instantly tell you your street location and GPS coordinates.
>> Know where the nearest hose reel or evacuation point is in the park.
>> Make sure all your family and friends know what to do and where to meet in an emergency.
