Finding the right Ezytrail Winton caravan for the way you travel

Six layouts, four body lengths and two weight classes make Ezytrail’s on-road Winton MK2 range easy to match to your tow vehicle and your travel style

Not every caravan trip involves corrugations and creek crossings. For plenty of Australians, the ideal getaway is a sealed highway, a powered site near the water and a hot shower at the end of the day. That might be a long weekend down the coast, a winter run north chasing warmer weather or a lap of the country taken one caravan park at a time.

That’s the traveller Ezytrail had in mind with the Winton MK2. Better known for its off-road campers and hybrids, the brand has built the Winton as a dedicated on-road range, and the MK2 line-up now spans six layouts across 10ft, 13ft, 16ft and 17ft body sizes. Every model comes with an ensuite, air conditioning, hot water and a properly equipped kitchen. What changes from one Winton to the next is the floorplan, the weight and the power set-up, so the real question is which one suits the people travelling and the vehicle doing the towing.

Start with what you tow

The smartest place to begin is the tow vehicle in your driveway. Every caravan carries an Aggregate Trailer Mass (ATM) rating, which is the maximum it can weigh when fully loaded, and that figure needs to sit within your vehicle’s braked towing capacity.

The Winton range splits neatly into two groups here. The Winton 10 MK2 and Winton 13 MK2 are rated at 1500kg and 1600kg ATM respectively, which opens them up to a wider range of tow vehicles, including many SUVs and wagons. Every Winton 16 and 17 is rated at 2500kg ATM, well within the braked towing capacity of most dual-cab utes and large SUVs.

Two other numbers are worth checking before you fall for a floorplan. Ball weight, the load the caravan places on your towbar, ranges from 95kg on the Winton 10 to 215kg on the Winton 17F Twin, so make sure your vehicle and towbar are rated for it. Then look at the gap between tare and ATM, which is what’s left for water, gas, food and gear. The Winton 13 MK2, for example, starts from a 1285kg tare, leaving 315kg of payload before any options are added.

Compact comfort for two – Winton 10 and Winton 13

The Winton 10 MK2 is the smallest and lightest van in the range, aimed at couples who want easy towing and something that’s simple to store at home. Ezytrail uses a convertible lounge-and-bed arrangement to fit a dinette, kitchen and ensuite with cassette toilet into the short body, and the inclusions punch above its size with a Dometic NRX80 fridge, Dometic air conditioner, 24-inch smart TV and Bluetooth media system. The MK2 update also brings upgraded suspension, more storage and provision for an optional external kitchen.

The Winton 13 MK2 adds 3ft of length, and that space goes into storage and sleeping flexibility. The bedding can be set up as split singles, a double or a king, alongside a fully equipped kitchen and a self-contained ensuite.

Both compact models run a 120 amp-hour (Ah) lithium battery and a 100-watt (W) solar panel. That set-up is pitched at travellers who spend most nights on powered sites, which makes the pair a natural fit for first-time owners, weekenders and park-hoppers.

More space for couples – Winton 16F Twin, 17F Twin and 17R Twin

Three of the larger Wintons are designed for two, and choosing between them comes down to how you like to sleep and live on the road.

The Winton 16F Twin MK2 pairs a queen island bed with an ensuite that has a separate shower and toilet. Its café lounge folds out into a sofa bed, so there’s room for a third traveller when a grandchild or friend comes along for part of the trip.

The Winton 17F Twin MK2 uses its extra length for living space. The queen island bed (2000 x 1530mm) sits on a lift-up base with storage underneath, the ensuite again separates the shower and toilet, and a wraparound kitchen bench carries a dual induction cooktop, microwave and 153L upright fridge-freezer. A straight sofa and gas-lift table make the lounge a comfortable place to settle in on a wet afternoon.

The Winton 17R Twin MK2 swaps the queen for split single beds, each 2000 x 800mm, with a shared bedside cabinet and tallboy storage between them. It’s the layout to look at for couples who keep different hours or sleep better with their own space, and for friends or siblings sharing a van. It also gets a separate shower and toilet, plus a folding café lounge.

Room for the kids – Winton 16R Quad

The Winton 16R Quad MK2 is the range’s family layout. A queen master bed sits at one end and two bunks (each 1835 x 700mm) at the other, with four large drawers beneath the bunks for clothes, toys and travel gear. Between them is a large L-shaped folding sofa, a kitchen with dual induction cooktop, microwave and upright fridge-freezer, and an ensuite with shower and cassette toilet. Front and rear tunnel boots take care of the bulkier items, and the 16R Quad shares the same 2500kg ATM as the couples’ 16ft and 17ft models.

What the bigger Wintons share

All four 16ft and 17ft models step up to a 235Ah lithium battery and a 340W, 48-volt Back-Contact solar panel with anti-shading technology, designed to limit the drop in output when part of the panel falls into shade from trees or the awning. A 7-inch touchscreen keeps tabs on the power system, while two fresh water tanks totalling 200 litres and an 80L grey water tank give the larger Wintons more flexibility between powered sites.

Underneath, they share a hot-dip galvanised chassis and drawbar, independent torsion suspension with shock absorbers and 12-inch electric brakes. Everyday touring touches include a reversing camera with in-car display, roll-out awning and outdoor table.
