Tamworth MP, Kevin Anderson, has lodged a petition on behalf of the Tamworth and District Caravan and Leisure Club containing more than 11,000 signatures, calling on the NSW Government to bring the cost of registration for caravans into line with neighbouring states.
“The petition was launched more than 12 months ago to address the unfair differences in registration costs, and has gained support from across Australia,” Anderson said.
The NSW Government recently called for feedback on proposed changes to light vehicle registration
in the state, including changing the way caravan registration fees are determined to a 'base fee' plus a 'cost per kg' charge, to make the system fairer.
A caravan over 2.5 tonnes currently costs $449 to register in NSW, compared to around $175 in Queensland and less than $50 in Victoria.
Tamworth and District Caravan and Leisure Club Secretary, Pam Wilson, said a fairer system would discourage the not uncommon practice of registering a NSW-based caravan in another state to save costs.
“Whilst it is welcomed that revenue raised from registration and traffic infringements is directed into upgrading roads, we still need a fairer registration system,” she said.
“Often due to the unfair costs that NSW residents face, they are inclined to register their vehicles interstate."
