Ensuring your caravan is level when setting up for the night is important for a number of reasons. As well as the obvious safety issues, a level caravan is often needed for the fridge to work properly, not to mention a good night’s sleep!
But even when using leveling ramps and a spirit level, it’s often a time-consuming chore, especially on rough or uneven ground.
?
Now a clever new electronic gadget is available that promises to take the guesswork, as well as the hard work, out of levelling your caravan.
Designed in Australia and built in Belgium, the Ezylevel comprises two small ‘black boxes’: a transmitter that’s placed inside the caravan and a separate remote receiver that’s carried in the car.
Through a system of flashing red lights, the receiver indicates whether adjustment (up or down) is needed to the front, left or right of the van. When it’s level on all sides a green light flashes.
While you might still need to get out of the car to install leveling ramps or wind the jockey wheel after unhitching the caravan, the remote control system means there’s less running back and forth as the unit beeps as soon as the correct level is found.
The Ezylevel’s designers, Tony Carpani and Gary Gleeson, claim it’s more accurate than a conventional spirit level, and will level your RV to within half a degree.
To keep it close to hand, the receiver also comes with a magnetic back so it can attach to the drawbar.
The trick unit retails for around $200-$250 and is already attracting interest from caravan manufacturers including Bushtracker, which is considering offering it as a feature on its hard-core, off-road caravans.
Gleeson, who demonstrated the device using a hand-made, scale-model tow rig on the CoastToCoast stand at the Sydney Supershow, said the Ezylevel had been extensively tested while travelling around Australia.
He said the patent-pending technology is also applicable to other areas requiring ‘level’ equipment including the trucking and construction industries.
