The unofficial prize for most eye-catching rig at this year’s Melbourne Leisurefest show goes to a striking yellow/white fibreglass caravan towed by a matching Holden Commodore ute dubbed the ‘Sportsvan’.
Designed to create a buzz at the tiny, two-van display of boutique Melbourne brand Karakampa, the special display van shows potential buyers what level of customisation is available.
The bold yellow and black vinyl striping running along the sides and front of the two-berth Karakampa exactly matches the bright yellow painted and black striped Holden Commodore ute up front, fitted with a sleek, contoured canopy.
The aerodynamic ‘Sportsvan’ hard-top lid, which comes with a carbon-fibre rear tailgate and reverse camera, is distributed by Melbourne-based composite specialists Bellmont Nominee, which took over the three-year-old Karakampa Caravans business from its original owners about six months ago after they decided to retire and hit the road in Karakampa ‘No.1’.
As part of the no-cost show special, buyers can order a Karakampa with similar highlights to match their tow vehicle. All they have to do is supply the vehicle’s paint code. The striping would normally be a $1000 option.
Priced from $49,990, the super-smooth, ‘no wood’ Karakampa comes with a galvanised chassis, independent suspension, shower/toilet, rear awning, kitchen and dinette, and either a double bed or two single beds.
Due to its mostly fibreglass construction, the 5.9m long Karakampa weighs just 1600kg fully loaded, making it suitable for towing behind smaller vehicles.
New owner Bellmont, is marketing the Karakampa under its Centaur Products division, which also includes the stylish Sportsvan canopy and divi van ‘police pod’. The company has plans to introduce a 'rough road' version as well as a four-berth Karakampa model in the future.
Reviving memories of Holden’s ‘shaggin’ wagon’ Sandman panel van of the 1970s, the factory-look, flush-mounted Sportsvan canopy as shown is priced around $5000 (not including ute).?
