West Australian manufacturer Coromal has entered the growing off-road glamper-van market with a bang, releasing a heavy-weight caravan jam-packed with features and priced accordingly at $111,500 (driveaway NSW). Described as the most “extreme vehicle” in the company’s 39 year history, the new Pioneer X4 boasts a number of Coromal firsts including the use of Cruisemaster XT independent trailing arm coil suspension, Hitchmaster DO35 coupling and chunky off-road tyres.
The 21ft (6.7m) Pioneer X4 prototype on display at the recent Perth and Sydney caravan shows, features Coromal’s latest fibreglass composite panel construction, including one piece panels for the floor as well as roof and front panel.
Almost 2.5m at its widest point, the body also has an aerodynamic, tapered front section as part of its ‘patent pending’ design.
“It’s a similar width at the front to the four-wheel drive that you’re towing it with, so you can have more visibility down the side of your van than you’ve ever had before,” said Darren Raven, the national events manager for Coromal Caravans’ parent company Fleetwood RV.
The front edges also have cutaways “so when you go through a ravine or over a dune and when you’re coming into a corner you don’t cut away the front of your van”.
Other heavy-duty protection is provided by painted steel ‘brush bars’ along the front, sides, back and roof, along with skid-plates guarding the extreme rear cutaway section.
The protoytype has an eye-catching cream exterior with bold tyre mark decals running over the front and sides. Other external features include a checker plate front toolbox containing a generator and two gas bottles, slide-out kitchen, external pantry and entertainment locker, and rear storage lockers.
The battery system includes 300W solar panels, while water storage is taken care of with 160 litre fresh and 118 litre grey tanks.
The spacious interior sports Coromal’s latest gloss ‘flush’ furniture, with a leather club lounge at the rear, large central kitchen and front bedroom with queen-sized bed and separate shower and toilet.
The prototype has a ball weight of 310kg, 2835kg Tare and 3435kg ATM.
Coromal has brought back the Pioneer name after using it in the past for a number of off-road-oriented pop-tops as well as camper trailers. Raven said there was “more to come” in regards to off-road models from Coromal, which could include a new camper trailer as well as other off-road caravans.
In its drive upmarket, Coromal has also released a completely updated new version of its previous flagship Princeton touring caravan. The 24ft (7.3m) tandem axle model displayed in Sydney featured a big 4.4m slide-out for the queen bed and club lounge along with what is believed to be industry ‘firsts’ of a queen bed with tilting backrest and sliding TV, both electrically controlled.
The 48in Smart LCD TV hangs from a mount located under overhead lockers and across the windows along one side, sliding horizontally via remote control to allow viewing from both the bed and lounge areas.
The 24ft Princeton featured a drive-away price of $99,950 as well as similar, heavy-weight sandwich panel construction to the Pioneer X4, with a nominated ball weight of 220kg, 2810kg Tare and 3410kg ATM.
