We're suckers for military-spec campers here at caravancampingsales HQ: whether it's an ex-Army 6x6 ambulance converted to an expedition vehicle, or just an RV that looks like it might be heading into battle...
But now the fantasy is close to reality with an impressive ex-military motorhome conversion hitting the market that's tailor-made for extreme Outback trips and bone-jarring bucket-list adventures.
The 1997 Land Rover Perentie Bushranger currently located in the NSW Central Coast region started life as an infantry carrier in the Australian Army, before it was purchased at auction and turned into a very comfortable and well-equipped two-berth 'civilian' motorhome.
In its current go-anywhere camping role, the six-wheel drive off-roader is described as having "everything you need for remote travel" including a comfy fit-out incorporating a lounge/dinette that converts to a queen bed, and a kitchen with four-burner gas cooktop, sink and slide-out fridge.
Other built-in camping luxuries include a 100 litre water tank and hot water unit for outside showers, and an extended off-grid battery system that includes an inverter and 320W solar panels.
Gullwing doors along the sides flip up to create a nice flow-though breeze on hot sunny days, while the rear living space is easily accessed from the front cab.
A GVM under 4500kg also means you can drive it on a car licence, while the 370 litre diesel tank should keep the Isuzu 3.9-litre, four-cylinder engine chugging along between remote fuel stops.
There's also plenty of storage inside and on top of the vehicle, and safety items like a two-way HF radio set-up that includes "a high power linear amplifier that should be able to send to the moon and back".
While retaining much of its original camo look, other clever mods include converting the former turret to an opening skylight.
The base vehicle has also been beefed up with an engine turbo with intercooler, aftermarket snorkel and shock absorbers, a winch, LED lightbar and split rims to allow easier roadside tyre changes.
Owner Melinda said the battle-ready camper had been "an extremely comfortable" vehicle in which to undertake some hardcore 'tour of duty' trips.
"My partner and I bought it from the Army auctions, and he did all the modifications but unfortunately he's passed away, and my step-daughter and I are selling it because it's too much of a vehicle for either of us," she explains.
"We took it on a few good remote trips, including a trip through southern Queensland, South Australia and across the Simpson Desert, and a second trip up the Madigan Line with a couple of other Land Rovers..."
"It's for somebody who really wants to get out remote and feel that they can fix any issues they might have, although it was less of a problem than some of other vehicles doing those sorts of trips because it's built sturdily for the military."
Also providing peace of mind for potential buyers is Melinda's assurance that her mechanically-minded partner "put in the best quality of everything (during the conversion) because he didn't want a breakdown anywhere".
But if something does go wrong, the $50,000 asking price includes a few rare spares including three axles (front, middle and rear) and a gearbox, still in their wooden boxes, and a replacement brake booster assembly.
