Essential Caravans enters administration

Distressed Melbourne manufacturer winds up as new imported range hits the show circuit

Administrators have been appointed for the once big Melbourne brand Essential Caravans, after the 11-year old Aussie manufacturer recently announced it was shutting its Somerton, Victoria factory as part of a proposed business restructure.

Paul A. Allen and Glenn J. Franklin of PKF Melbourne were appointed voluntary administrators last week by Essential Caravans' director, Jamie Johnson.

In an earlier statement, Johnson said Essential was transferring its operations to the Pakenham, Victoria manufacturing facility of Design RV, of which Johnson is also an owner.

Johnson is also leading the revival of Queensland manufacturer Zone RV after it collapsed in late-2025, and clarification notices regarding the level of independence of Johnson's three RV-related business interests, designed to reassure consumers, have been posted online.

"Jamie Johnson, who led the purchase of Zone RV, also owns Essential, so we understand there may be concern," Zone RV said on its website.

"Zone RV is owned and run by Adventure Zone RV Pty Ltd, a separate company with its own shareholders. Neither of our directors holds any role at Essential.

"Essential’s administration doesn’t change our plans, and we’re building, delivering and taking orders as normal."

It's also "business as usual" at Design RV, according to a statement on the Design RV website.

"Design RV formally clarifies that its own business operations remain unaffected and fully operational.... (while) remaining firmly committed to Australian manufacturing and customer service."

A first meeting of Essential Caravans' creditors is scheduled for October 30, and Johnson said that it is Essential Caravans' "intention that all current orders will be fulfilled".

"The administrators and management team are conducting an immediate review of all current customer caravan builds and delivery schedules to minimise disruption to buyers and dealership partners," he said.

The road ahead

The latest update comes after a new range of Chinese-built Essential Caravans have been displayed for sale at Victorian caravan shows in recent weeks by Design RV dealers.

Essential says it built 7000-plus Australian-made vans since 2015, before making the call to shift manufacturing offshore, although it is yet to update its website or make any formal announcement about the new direction.

Essential Caravans has been contacted for further comment.

Meanwhile, Zone RV has also provided an update on the Sunshine Coast based operation which restarted under new management earlier this year, saying Zone has since delivered more than 90 'vans across Australia.

It says it has also built a growing network of Zone RV dealers while launching a new 2027 line-up, including the return of the cut-price Base range.
