Elvis Festival nominated for Grey Nomad Award
Cheap, cheerful travel experiences in running for inaugural grey nomad awardsAustralia’s biggest Elvis tribute festival and its most visited historic jetty, along with a unique barramundi experience centre and a popular free camping area in the Outback, are among the finalists in the 2019 Grey Nomad Awards.
The annual Parkes Elvis Festival is in the running for "Best Grey Nomad Festival or Event" in the inaugural Grey Nomad awards, which reward “organisations and destinations catering to Australia’s mature age tourists”.
Promoted as the “largest celebration of Elvis' life in the Southern Hemisphere”, the colourful Parkes Festival encompasses more than 200, mostly free events across five days and attracts plenty of older caravanners who stay in nearby parks during the January event.
Kimba, the small stop-off promoted as “halfway across the Nullabor” and home of the Big Cockatoo, has been nominated twice for a Grey Nomad award. The Kimba Recreational Reserve has been shortlisted in the 'Best Grey Nomad Council Free-stay Campsite' category and the Kimba Community Development Group's grey nomads volunteer program is in the running for Best Grey Nomad Volunteer Program or Project category.
The Queensland Gulf town of Karumba has also been nominated in the 'Best Grey Nomad Attraction or Tour" category, for its Les Wilson Barramundi Discovery Centre, while the iconic Busselton Jetty has been named a finalist in the Best Attraction or Tour category.
Judged by “mature-aged tourism professionals”, the inaugural Grey Nomad Awards recognise businesses and attractions that provide exemplary products, services or experiences for mature-aged travellers in Australia.
"These (grey nomad) travellers want authentic experiences, camaraderie, reliable mobile reception, easy-access places to park and shop, well-kept amenities and great customer service,” explained Awards director Liz Rivers.
"They're the things on which the awards' criteria focus."
The winners of the 2019 Grey Nomad Awards will be announced at the Art of Attraction conference on Queensland's Sunshine Coast in early November.
