Melbourne’s Elite Caravans wants to ‘make your day’ a wet and muddy one, it seems, with the introduction of its most bush-ready model to date, the evocatively-named Dirty Harry.
Unveiled at the NSW Caravan, Camping & Touring Supershow, the new compact van is narrower than Elite’s other off-road models, allowing it to follow in the tyre tracks of your LandCruiser or Patrol for better off-road manoeuvrability.
With a compact 14ft by 7ft 6in body, the Dirty Harry is equipped for some serious bush-bashing, with a 150mm dual beam, galvanised chassis, Cruisemaster independent coil suspension, DO35 hitch, galvanised sheet underfloor protection, two heavy-duty spare wheel carriers, and 16inch alloy wheels with Cooper Discovery mud tyres.
“Anywhere where your four-wheel drive can go, that will go,” boasted Elite Caravans’ boss Peter Smith, who was exhibiting his eye-catching range for the first time at the nine-day Sydney Supershow.
Inside, the compact layout features a double bed with pillowtop innerspring mattress, small kitchen, shower/toilet combo, plus a small leather lounge/dinette.
Appliances include a Waeco 147 litre fridge/freezer, microwave, Smev combo sink/stove, 22in LED TV, Bluetooth-ready audio system with marine-grade speakers, continuous gas hot water system, air-conditioner, filtered water system, 11ft awning, LED lighting, plus a comprehensive battery management system with two, 105Ah AGM batteries and 270 watt solar panels.
To make sure it can stand up to some Clint Eastwood-style punishment, the Dirty Harry also features ‘hail resistant’ aluminium stucco cladding, plus checkerplate protection for the body as well as the two, 60 litre water tanks.
The plucky little off-roader is available in a number of sizes and layouts, and joins the bigger Goulburn and Balistic models as part of Elite Caravan’s serious bush-basher range.
Priced at $69,900 tow-away, the 14ft van on display in Sydney had a Tare weight of 1700kg and ATM of 2110kg.
