As you may remember from school, rust is an oxide formed by the reaction of iron with oxygen in the presence of water. It's an electrochemical process that involves the loss of negatively charged free electrons causing a valency (or gap) in the iron atom making it unstable, allowing the rusting process to develop.
Zinc coatings and chemical treatments tend to be quite effective in slowing down the process under normal conditions, but extreme conditions (not to mention damage to the coatings) may call for additional measures.
The AutoProtect RP-4 system is claimed to sense the valencies in the iron atoms and impress negative electrons back onto the body of the vehicle. Its Intelli-Pulse technology uses miniature surface-mounted components to provide the required pulsed current.
The maintenance-free system is available in 12V and 24V versions and retails for $850-$950. So long as it's installed by an authorised dealer, it comes with a comprehensive rust warranty of 10 years on new vehicles and five years on used vehicles.
