Electro-assist first for Mountain Trail

Premium off-road manufacturer makes setting up a breeze with new push-button option for soft-floor campers

In a bid to entice more grey nomads, premium off-road camper trailer manufacturer Mountain Trail Campers has introduced an electro-assist option designed to take the sweat out of setting up and packing down.

The Albury/Wodonga-based company claims the auto set-up system is a first for a soft-floor tent trailer manufacturer, although Queensland’s Travelander has a remote-control system on its hard-floor and slide-on campers, and Jayco and Goldstream RV recently introduced automatic pop-tops for their more traditional-style campers.

The Mountain Trail system automatically folds or unfolds the gas strut-assisted main tent and frame at the push of a button. It runs off the 12V system, but can be over-ridden manually in case of malfunction or battery failure.

The new electro-assist option is available for $1376 and can also be retrofitted, for $1686 to any Mountain Trailer camper produced from July 2011.

Meanwhile Mountain Trail Campers, which recently picked up a trophy at the 2013 Offroad Camper of the Year awards, is also targeting the budget end of the market by introducing a cheaper entry-level model to its line-up.

Priced at $23,993, the new Excursion model undercuts the previous entry-level Escape on which it is based by $6000, although it misses out on some features like the handy, entry-step section located in front of the bed.

As a result the Excursion is 60cm shorter and about 100kg lighter than the Escape, making it more compact and better suited to extreme off-roading thanks to superior approach and departure angles.

The Excursion also has a more basic 12 volt system, with only one 100aH battery and 25amp AC battery charger fitted as standard, and no battery monitor or inverter.

The new Excursion, as well as a top-spec Evolution model fitted with electro-assist, will be on display at the NSW Caravan, Camping and Touring Supershow, which runs from April 20-28.
