But now another German manufacturer, Dethleffs has provided its vision of a fossil fuel-free RV future with its all-electric, solar-backed e.home concept motorhome, unveiled at the 2017 Dusseldorf caravan show in Germany.
The e.home concept is not unlike other European motorhomes inside, but it’s the solar panel covered exterior that makes it really stand out.
Around 31 square metres of thin-film solar panels, generate up to 3000 watts of electricity to keep the 228Ah sodium-nickel-chloride battery system charged.
One of the first C-class motorhomes to go down the electric route, it’s based on the battery-powered Iveco Daily chassis, which is powered by an 80kW electric motor and a number of battery options.
Range is up to 280km (without the camper conversion) and the onboard battery is good for about 1500 charges equal to around 250,000km.
Doing away with all ‘dirty’ fuel including gas, the e.home concept has plenty of ‘green’ technologies including ‘phase change’ materials that absorb heat during the day and release it at night when the temperature drops.
There are also infrared heating panels in the floor, walls and furniture designed to heat up objects rapidly, and foil-based technologies that darken the windows at night – potentially doing away with blinds.
Other equipment supplied by Victron Energy ensures the ‘smart’ battery system can power all appliances including a ceramic cooktop.
The e.home concept is not the first electric motorized RV, with UK company Hillside Leisure putting into production a smaller, all-electric campervan around three years ago.
