Alcohol is often blamed for road accidents, but did you know fatigue is also a major factor in many crashes? It’s a particularly relevant issue for those that spend long periods behind the wheel, including caravanners.
UK road safety association GEM Motoring Assist has put out a timely video warning of the dangers of driving when tired.
As well as the usual tips like taking a 15 minute break every two hours of driving, there are a few less common ones like avoiding ‘danger times’ when people are naturally most likely to feel tired, such as between 3am and 5am and 2pm and 4pm.
Also avoiding certain medications and alcohol on long drives as well as big, heavy meals; these can exacerbate any tiredness and increase the chance of a fatigue-related crash.
“It is now widely accepted that fatigue is a major contributory factor in road crashes, particularly in the early hours of the morning,” said GEM chief executive David Williams. “Many thousands of collisions occur because of a driver’s reduced ability to respond quickly and safely if a dangerous situation arises.
“If you’re making a long road journey, then it’s vital to be properly rested before you set off – and to ensure you build in time for breaks on the way.
