Campbellfield, Victoria might be the epicentre of Australia’s caravan manufacturing industry, but the rural NSW town of Gloucester is fast gaining a worldwide reputation as a source of quality camping and 4WD equipment.
Nestled in the shadow of the Gloucester Tops, Drifta is a company that began 16 years ago building camp kitchens out of a double garage but now operates out of a four-acre factory with a range encompassing a wide selection of camping products including the DOT range of camper-trailers.
A growth spurt in the last three years has seen owner Luke Sutton not only expanding the DOT range of trailers but also the Snow Peak camping accessory range from the USA.
While Drifta is concentrating most of its efforts on the Aussie market, it has also begun exporting canvas products, drawers and Snow Peak camping gear to Europe.
Drifta also builds caravan and campervan kitchens and storage drawers and even offers a range of axes made on site at Gloucester.
During its expansion Drifta has increased its staff count from 25 to 65. It builds the DOT camper-trailers from the chassis up, and has its own canvas stitching room that makes the majority of canvas products that leave the factory doors, including a new bright pink range. Sutton’s willingness to engage with customers via a series of how-to and adventure videos has been one reason for Drifta’s success, allowing the company to develop a strong social media presence and expand its customer base well beyond Australia.
“I started in my double garage, for two years, then moved to Gloucester and bought two acres,” he explained during a factory tour. “I built a shed and started making the kitchens, then started employing people.
“After another 12 months, we started designing and building camping trailer kitchens, which is where we started to get busy.”
