A futuristic off-grid caravan that is the brainchild of a couple of ex Tesla employees and has been dubbed the “first purpose built all-electric RV”, has gone on sale in the USA, with first production scheduled for mid-2025.
First revealed as the Lightship L1 prototype in early-2023, the swish American-built travel trailer now called the AE.1 Cosmos Edition is available for purchase in North American markets.

Just 50 will be built at Lightship's Broomfield, Colorado production facility; all coming with an eye-watering price tag of US$250,000 (AUD392,000).
According to Lightship, the AE.1's ultra-modern four-berth layout "brings the comfort and refinement of an automotive-grade HVAC system, a spacious, fully outfitted bathroom, and a galley kitchen equipped with a dishwasher, refrigerator, microwave, convection oven and induction cooktop".

The 8.1m long by 2.55m wide Lightship van utilises telescoping hard-side walls to raise its roof electrically to 3.0m high in Camp Mode, and deliver an impressive 2.25m interior height.
Fitted with a monster lithium battery pack and full solar roof, the AE.1 Cosmos Edition can also be used to charge up your EV tow car when camping, or run the home appliances when parked in the driveway.
It also boasts a TrekDrive system with motorised axles that help 'drive' the tow vehicle and improve its range when towing.

“With the limited-edition Lightship AE.1 Cosmos, we’re delivering a dream travel experience for sustainable travelers, tech lovers and EV enthusiasts,” said Ben Parker, Lightship Co-Founder and Chief Product Officer. “Our mission is to bring RVs into the electric age with the AE.1. The Cosmos Edition is the first premium realization, and we have other trims to fit travelers’ needs coming quickly down the road.”
The AE.1 Cosmos Edition is available in two colour schemes, Timberline and DuskHorizon, and Lightship is also planning to release three additional trim levels, called Atmos, Panos, and Terros.
