Cuts to NSW rego fees

RV travellers in NSW will receive a 40 per cent reduction in registration fees for their caravans and camper trailers, effective from November 1.

The NSW Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight Melinda Pavey said “the change will apply to towed caravans and purpose-built camper trailers weighing up to 4.5 tonnes," and will bring savings of between $46 to $471 depending on the vehicle's weight.

“The good news for NSW pensioners is that those with a caravan who are eligible for a free registration can now have a 40 per cent reduction on their caravan.” Towed caravans and purpose-built camper trailers that are privately registered will be eligible for the 40 per cent reduction in motor vehicle tax, but customers will still be required to pay the standard NSW registration fees including the annual fee of $65.

Rego charges in NSW have been more expensive than other states because they are based on the weight of a vehicle "to reflect the damage that is caused to the road network," the NSW government said.

The move was welcomed by the caravan industry, including the Australian Caravan Club which said that the 40% reduction will be appreciated by families, pensioners and self-funded retirees.

“Our Club also acknowledges that New South Wales has some of the most generous registration provisions for pensioners in any State.  Anyone even on a part pension receives free registration for one vehicle each year,” said ACC Chairman Craig Humphrey.

“Our Club lobbied the New South Wales government back in 2014 pleading for a reduction in the high registration fees on caravans in that State. Our pleas fell on deaf ears at the time,” he said.

“However, our Club questions what the New South Wales Government is doing to align the State with other States such as Victoria when it comes to setting registration fees on caravans and camper trailers.”

“Compared to other States, the New South Wales registration fee for private caravan owners is over-priced, placing an unfair burden on caravanners.”
