Cub revives soft-floor campers
New Oz-built Coolibah campers breathe life into defunct Johnno’s rangeSydney’s Cub Campers continues to fly the flag for the embattled Australian camper trailer industry, with the re-launch this year of the Johnno’s Campers soft-floor camper range under its new Coolibah brand.
On display at this year’s Melbourne and Sydney Caravan Supershows, the two-model Coolibah camper range (there will also be a rental version) is largely unchanged from the rugged, entry-level Australian-built campers sold and rented by the nationwide network formerly operated by the Queensland-based Johnno’s Campers, which was wound up in late-2016.
The two Coolibah soft-floor models on display at the Sydney Supershow included the 890kg (Tare) CC-B ‘Base’ off-road camper complete with slide-out kitchen from $17,990, with the bigger 990kg (Tare) CC-W ‘Walk-up’ model priced at $21,990 drive-away.
Both have an ATM of 1500kg and come standard with Al-Ko leaf spring suspension, 10in electric brakes, 80 litre water tank, 100Ah battery, four-burner cooker and 4kg gas bottle.
The Coolibah campers, which are built with Australian canvas and steel and come with a five-year canvas, suspension and chassis warranty, complement Cub’s existing range of entry to mid-priced hard-floor, rear- and front-fold campers, which are now available with an optional, electric EZ-X auto-opening system.
Like the Johnno’s Campers, the Coolibah range is built at Cub Camper’s Sydney factory, with the canvas work complete with new orange trim out-sourced to a local supplier.
The new Coolibah range also marks a return to their roots for the 49 year-old Cub Campers, which claims to have built the world’s first soft-floor camper trailer back in the early-1970s.
One of few remaining Australian manufacturers to successfully compete head on with cut-price Chinese imported campers, Cub says it has built more than 20,000 campers in total and remains a driving force behind the Australian Manufactured Camper Trailer Guild.
