Serious off-road fans these days demand a lot of power for their four-wheel drives and recreational vehicles – and not just internal-combustion power either.
Those who spend every second weekend camped out under the stars in some remote location want readily-tapped electrical power for their fridges, lighting, entertainment and all the other luxury trappings of their home-away-from-home.
A well-prepared diesel four-wheel drive often comes with a second battery to power all these ancillaries, but how do you keep that battery charged once the vehicle is parked?

A company named CTEK offers a couple of systems specifically designed for off-road enthusiasts camping in remote locations. The updated D250SE battery charger can recharge lithium batteries (12V LiFEPO4), AGM (absorbed glass mat) and lead-acid batteries, and can draw power from conventional sources or a renewable resource such as photovoltaic cells (solar power) without need for a regulator.
At 20 amps, the output of the D250SE is double that of a household power outlet. A built-in temperature sensor adjusts charging to suit hot or cold weather for longer battery life.
Both the battery charger and the company's Smartpass 120S power-management system can optimise power for those nights away from caravan parks and AC mains power without leaving the family stranded or bereft of cold beer.

The Smartpass 120S manages the electrical capacity of the four-wheel drive's starter battery and its service battery. It can be configured to maintain supply to critical systems and reduce supply to non-critical systems if need be.
In the event that the starter battery runs short of charge, the Smartpass 120S unit can transfer the necessary charge from the service battery to get the engine started. According to the manufacturer, both the D250SE and the Smartpass 120S are also compatible with 'smart' alternators.
CTEK anticipates that the DS250E and the Smartpass 120S will also be of value to tradesmen needing portable electrical power in the field.
“Both of these unique products have been developed to work as standalone units or together as a complete system,” says Robert Briggs, CTEK’s Asia Pacific Director of Sales and Marketing.

“Combined together, this powerful, safe and flexible charging solution gives you the ability to manage and control your power more effectively,” Briggs is quoted as saying in a press release.
“The traditional outdoor adventure has evolved. We no longer need to go without creature comforts when out on road – trips and family camping adventures; technology allows us to keep both vehicle and electricals charged, for the most
advanced, versatile, and comfortable set up. Australia is the perfect place for outdoor adventures, so we’re delighted to bring these new, industry – leading products to the country.”
The D250SE and Smartpass 120S are available to purchase at Repco for $499 and $530, respectively. Further information is available at the CTEK website.
