Coronet turns back the clock

Melbourne RV builder goes back to basics with air-con optional on new round-nose caravan

Long-standing Melbourne manufacturer Coronet has turned back the clock -- and bucked the trend for fitting every available appliance and gadget to a new caravan -- with its unique new 'bullnose' model unveiled at the 2019 Victorian Caravan Supershow.

Unlike almost anything on the market, and inspired by bulbous fifth-wheeler nosecones, Coronet says the eye-catching new 21ft 3in model with its fully curved front section is “a radical design that provides class leading interior volume and a Tare weight around 1850kg”.

Radical round nose Coronet delivers exceptional interior space

The 6070mm (internal body length) display van certainly delivered on that promise, with a roomy and refreshingly different layout that included an island queen bed, L-shaped lounge/dinette, well-equipped kitchen and a separate toilet and angled shower cubicle at the rear, alongside a multi-purpose ‘nook’ that could be used as a study, laundry, pantry, linen closet or built-in wardrobe.

Coronet says the new unnamed model, which can be ordered as a single or tandem axle, full-height or pop-top caravan, is aimed at couples upsizing from a camper trailer or hybrid, wanting a spacious caravan but without all the “bells and whistles” to keep it both lightweight and affordable.

No round walls or corners inside the spacious couple's layout

“Air conditioning is an option due to the fact that most camper and tent trailers are not equipped with these and due to the (new van’s) fully insulated foam filled walls, it will be cooler than conventional timber frame construction,” Coronet said.

“Other features of this caravan include reduced wind drag due to the redesigned frontal area and deleting the front boot (a full cross tunnel boot is standard) provides additional usable interior space."

Study nook or perhaps a stand-alone laundry at the rear

Coronet said it received a number of favourable comments about the design while it was being built, including 'radical', 'spacious', 'no longer claustrophobic', 'huge interior for its size', 'uncluttered' and "It's good to see that Coronet RV have deleted some of the gimmicks that are really not required”.

Priced around $60,000 as displayed, the air-con-free show van wasn't lacking in too many other features, with a 100Ah battery/solar system, 95L water tank, Thetford 141L fridge/freezer, AL-KO rubber torsion suspension and ESC, Camec continuous hot water, microwave, cooktop/grille and 24in TV all part of the package.

21ft 3in van has Tare of just 1850kg

“It’s true that caravans have become heavy and expensive and whilst this suits many, there are those that are accustomed to the simple things in life and Coronet RV have delivered,” the boutique Melbourne manufacturer claimed.
