A new entry-level version of the unique Opus camper trailer has been released by Melbourne company Purple Line.
Unlike other UK-designed but Australian assembled Opus campers, the new On-Road model features a lightweight German BPW chassis with over-ride rather than electric brakes, to deliver an ATM of 1050kg.
With a towball weight of just 68kg, Purple Line boss Malcolm Hill says the lightweight camper trailer can be towed by Australia’s top-selling car, the Toyota Corolla, as well as other popular small cars including the Mazda3 and Hyundai i30.
“The BPW chassis is standard in the UK and Europe, where they don’t have the big tow vehicles we have here,” he said.
“It’s designed for cars like the Corolla, which can tow 1300kg (braked) with a 130kg towball weight, and the Mazda3 (1200kg capacity and 75kg ball weight).
“In Australia, where Corolla and Mazda3 are the top-selling passenger cars, this makes the OPUS On-Road perfect for people who may never have thought of towing.
“Just fit a standard towbar and trailer plug and you’re ready to go – no wide mirrors, no electric brake controller – nothing complicated at all.
“And yet this super-light camper still has massive headroom, a kitchenette, two full-size double beds and a convertible club lounge for truly luxurious camping.”
It’s priced from $19,995 in ‘Ready to Roll’ spec including gas, battery, awning, cooker, sink, water tank and electric pump among other standard features.
