Conqueror Australia has released a cheaper, slightly less gung-ho version of its range-topping, military-proven UEV-490 off-road camper.
Priced at $39,990, or $15,000 less than the better equipped UEV-490, the Commander shares similar, rugged construction, design and layouts with Conqueror’s range-topping model but is aimed more at those “seeking Conqueror craftsmanship but with less focus on extreme off-roading”.
While offering a similar 1800kg ATM, the 4.9m long Commander’s galvanised chassis is lighter due to the use of a straightened C-section on the front beams, while a shorter drawbar with traditional ball coupling and over-ride drum brakes are used instead of the 490’s heavy-duty drawbar and 12 inch electric brakes.
The Commander also offers less road clearance, and uses a South African-type shade cloth for the windows instead of the midge-proof mesh on the UEV-490.
“While the Commander is still a very tough trailer, we recognise that not all of our customers need the extreme off-road capabilities of our UEV range so the Commander with its patented coil sprung independent suspension and riding slightly lower to the ground is ideal for off-road touring to less extreme destinations,” said Conqueror Australia’s Dan Bosschieter.
While the basic design will be familiar to UEV-490 owners, including lockable storage, three different bedding configurations, bathroom/shower facilities with hot water, and kitchen with cutlery, crockery and 74 litre fridge/freezer, the Commander comes with fewer luxuries and electronic gizmos.
Conqueror says the Commander, like the UEV-490, is easy to set up with a streamlined tent design with minimum poles, pegs and ropes and a modular design.
The South African-designed Commander is the first in Conqueror Australia’s new International range, and brings the number of models offered by the Australian importer to seven.
