Compact Rookie rolls in

Roma introduces new Italian-built micro-van for light travellers
One of the smallest caravans at this year's Melbourne Leisurefest (October 6 to 9) will be the 3.6-metre-long Italian-built Wingamm Rookie, which will be marketed exclusively in Australia by LittleRV Co, a new offshoot of Roma Caravans.
Sitting on an AL-KO chassis, with AL-KO rubber suspension and fitted with an AL-KO ball coupling and over-ride brakes, the all-fibreglass Rookie's trump card is its 780kg tare weight, which means it can be towed legally by even small cars from the Fiat 500 upwards.
Despite its diminutive size, the Rookie packs a roomy combined shower/toilet/vanity ensuite, a roomy four-seater lounge that converts into a queen bed, a Truma hot water service, two-burner cooktop and sink, ducted reverse-cycle air conditioning, an 80-litre Vitrifrigo three-way fridge, a 120Ah AGM battery, provision for solar power and 65 litre freshwater tank.
Built in Verona, Italy, the Rookie will join the Canadian-built Alto in Roma's new small caravan range, where it is expected to appeal to young travelling couples as an alternative to a camper trailer at its launch price of $38,500.
A feature that will appeal to many buyers of similarly priced wind-up or pop-top campers and caravans in this price bracket is the Rookie's instant set-up, thanks to its aerodynamic, monocoque and leak-proof (one piece) fibreglass body.
Sliding side windows and an opening roof hatch are included for ventilation while the large combined ensuite is unusually large. An awning is available to fit into the sail trail built into the van's door side.
To help Australians get accustomed to micro caravans, LittleRV plans to offer the Roma Rookie on the rental market, where it has major advantages over heavier caravans because an electronic brake controller is not required because of the Rookie's light weight.
Roma's Mark Palmarini said the Rookie and Alto were the first but far from the last small caravans to be sold under the new LittleRV banner, promising, "more to come" in 2017.
The Rookie will be on display on the Roma Caravan stand at Melbourne Leisurefest this week.
